Extended Metaphors

We read and analyzed the poem "Identity" by Pablo Noboa Polanco.  We love Polanco's use of extended metaphor and imagery in describing how his identity of being strong, free, and hopeful was forged from his own struggles in life.   Here are our own poems using extended metaphor.  Please enjoy!

Let them be as the beautiful moonlight.
    always relaxing,
    Admiring,
    and full of shiny stars.
    but dark and scary.
It’d rather be the street light
making sure you witness your way
like a God, who always make sure your in the right spot.
    To make you tough and
    To make you powerful
becoming the person you want to be.
I’d rather be the boring street light full of flies, termite, and moths
    than be the beautiful moonlight.
If I could make you safe
I’d rather be the street light.

  2. Let them be as shoes,

    always smells good ,

    and colorful

but getting stepped on by other people.

    It’d rather be farming boots

    disgusting

    like a mud.

    To strong and

    To simple

Walking like a robot with it.

    I’d rather be dirty
    than be neat

If I could stay clean all day

    I’d rather be always wet.

  3. Identity

    Let them be as city

    always convenient,

    rich,

    and enjoyable

but the city is noisy, dangerous, and difficult to breath .

    It’d rather be a countryside

    singing lullaby

like a mom that hugs her baby.

    To be comfortable and

    To be peaceful

    sleeping happily.

    I’d rather be countryside

    than be city

    If I could everything peaceful

    I’d rather be countryside.

  4. Identity by Dream ~

Let them be as monarch butterfly

    always beautiful, admired
    Loved
    and popular.

But trapped by people's dirty hands.

It’d rather be an ugly black butterfly

    Disgusting, distrustful and
    loathe

like an owl on a tree living in the mountains .

    To be free and explore.

To be dangerous so no one can hurt me.
    being untouchable and unreachable.

I’d rather be ugly, free, shunned and considered as bad luck

than being beautiful, popular but trapped by people's hands.
If I could be free, be myself and strong

I’d rather be an ugly black butterfly.

  5. Let them be as shirt,

    always looks good,

    and colorful

but getting judge by other people.

    It'd rather be a purse

    it may easily break

    but filled with good memories

    it helps to beautify me

    carried along wherever I go

many people can't find what they're looking for

    if empty, it is useless

  7. Let them be as fast food

    Always tasty,

    sweet like ice-cream.

    but not good for you.

    It’d rather be water

For those Swimming like fish and drinking it everyday,

To make the oceans alive and

to make everything clean and fresh,

    healthy and beautiful.

I’d rather be simple, clear water

than be a ice cream and french fries

If I could make everybody healthy

    I’d rather be water.

  8. Identity

Let them be as expensive smartphones
    always important to people,
    sometimes fun to people,
    and always used by people
    but will eventually become boring.
I’d rather be a cheap, simple football
    I will always be playing
    like a little happy kid.
    To become happier and
    To be healthier
becoming happy and full of energy.
    I’d rather be a football
    than be a phone
If I could make people healthy and happy
    I’d rather be a football.
