Odes

We recently read "Ode to My Socks" by Pablo Neruda.  Here are our odes.  Please enjoy!

  1. Ode to .

They taught me to use the dot
    Which marks the spot
To where the sentence halts to a stop.
    From just one swift motion,
The little mark on the page
    Holds great meaning.
As I aged, the dot became a part of my life.
Never once has there been a day
    I ceased to use it.
Like a fish to a fisherman,
Or perhaps a pet to its doting owner,
    There was a mutual relationship.

With every line I craft to this very moment,
The single dot wanders in my mind,
    telling me to stop.
A nagging voice in my head,
Demanding I end and continue on.
But like a magnificent, lyrical piece,
    The caesura that follows
    Evokes a powerful emotion
that can only be caused by silence.
Followed by a heavy flow of thunderous chords
that seem to strike harder after the pause.

It could be calm before the storm
    Or the breath you take.
    Is it foreshadowing or relief?
    It's pointless to ask
    When there are no boundaries.

    Despite its meager appearance,
The speck of ink holds the silent night sky
    That disrupts the blaring sun.
    What follows?
    There are never-ending possibilities.

  2. Ode to Death

    Mother Nature brought me
    Sleep that lasts forever
    A step she made herself
    With her strong, delicate hands,
Darkness is as peaceful as an empty tunnel.
I brushed my hand against it
As though it was a gentle beast
Fur made of nothing and everything.
    Erratic ends,
My mind a dart of panic,
    Fast, analytical prey
    Crimson red, was lead
    By the slight breeze,
    A hunting cat,
    A mouse:
My soul was honored this way
    By the lucid experience
It saw for the first time
    I seemed small, unimportant
    A member of the law,

Law unworthy of the wonderful chaos
Of the unknown in what we call life.

  3. Ode to Sleep, by: Tom,

    Sleep brought me
    an escape from reality,
    something nothing else can
    ever accomplish.
    Hours and hours of freedom
like a pair of wings taking flight,
shifting reality with their very might.
Taking me away from the stress,
    to a land of dreams,
a playground for my minds fanatics.
    Getting to take a break,
    relax from a hard day,
    forget about all the troubles,
and being able to wake up refreshed
    like a reborn phoenix.

  4. Ode to my Best Friend
    By kapeeps

A long time ago I was given
    a best friend
    like a child who
    was given a family heirloom
    not understanding its importance

    When we laughed
    When we cried
    Those were the days
    thinking we owned the night
    Two lone flowers
    blowing in the wind
Like two peas in a pod

But our dreams were left behind
Half of my heart is missing
    without you

  5. Ode to Challenges

    Challenges,
    tough as a lion,
but can make you feel like towering over the world
    It's a long journey,
    rough seas,thick walls
you will go through it all.
    Challenges will vary,
Always on the alert, you feel wary.

    Feeling strong as a bull,
    nothing will defeat you.

Always building and progressing is not always easy,
People will say "You can't do it", so cheesy.
Prove them wrong and soar like an eagle through what you learn
All the work will pay off and you will be free, unstoppable, strong, and bold.
And in the end, who knows what you'll be able to hold.

  6. Ode to Fragrance

    Fragrance
    ever present,
it fills or lives with sweet fascination
like the first rays of light to caress the earth
It flutters by in wisps of joy
bringing light to the eyes of all who witness
the subtle breezes of honey and ocean waves
But it is given a great injustice
    for it is inevitably overlooked
While the world is caught up in the glamour of sight
We do not realize the soft wonders fragrance brings us all
    It dutifully protects us,
warning of the dangers this planet is plagued with,
like the loyal cavalry, asking for no pay,
to guard us in our lives
It is the flickering candle in a dark cavern
It is the stream of pure, crisp water
    in a temperate autumn forest
    Without it,
    all would be dull

  7. Ode to bones

    by Peter Griffin

The structure of the human body,
    a white, stone like frame.
    A framework of solid MILK,
it’s what keeps us from going floppy.

A glorious castle made of quarts
with guards to ward off invaders.
Stoic and thankless for the work it’s done
like a god in a country of atheists.

An enormous wall under siege from the world
constantly being beaten but remaining standing.
Hiding away within a warm, wet darkness
it guards the weak, defenseless organs
like a mother hen defends it’s chicks.

Take a moment to thank your milky warrior
    feed it some yummy milk.

  8. Ode to Food by CEO of Corona Beer

    Mom walked to the table
    dinner in her hands
    homemade baked spaghetti
that smell lifts me in the air and carries me to the table.
I devour it like a wolf who hasn't eaten in weeks.
    Dad bought a dream cake.
I sink my teeth in it like a shark does to its prey.
My taste buds leap in excitement.
With my parents help the food is gone in a split second.
It makes us smile, relaxed, and happy.
We can pray, we can say our thanks.
But it will never be enough to make up for the food we are given.
And the people who make it.
    Food brings us together,
    and together, we are happy.

  9. Ode to dog

    I step outside
    to be greeted by dog.
    Her soft, velvet fur,
    brushing up on my leg.
    Her eyes, like windows,
    peering into a loving soul.
    Her tongue, a blanket
    lightly brushing my face.
    My loving companion,
    always close, always kind.
    A ray of sunshine
brightening up an otherwise mundane morning.
    She is like a bed,
always a relief after a long day.
    Dog is my companion.
    Dog is my friend.

  10. Ode to The Jacket by meh
    This Jacket brought me
Warmth on a cold Monday morning
    Like an egg
being sat on by a hen.

    When its 60 degrees,
    When its 70 degree.
    Those were the mornings
Where I used it the most.
    Like a baby kangaroo
Getting warm in its moms pouch.

A jacket warmer than the sun,
Oh, how I would love to keep
    It forever.
    But too bad,
    It will never last.

  11. Ode to Childhood

    By Boar Vessel 500-600 B.C.

    Gadgets to simple knicknacks,
    sunburns and red, ripe scrapes,
    blue bruises to picking berries,
it was gone in an instant,
    but remembered for an eternity.

From tapping nintendos until our thumbs peeled
and turning red from our own form of pressure,
    from getting lost until sundown
with the cotton candy clouds looking down on us,
from water guns to sugary sweet avocado popsicles
    and watermelon eating contests,
it didn’t seem blissful until it wasn’t there at all.

    Dear childhood,
when my biggest problem was if i’d win the next competition,
if i’d resolve a quarrel with my best friend before the morning,
and if i’d finally make that basket,
you’re at the core of me,
like anything great in life, you were gone
    before anyone could be grateful.

  12. Ode to Guns. :)

    BANG! BANG!
    You make my heart flutter
    The bullets fly true,
Like soft birds of a flock,
Who fly together to the end.
    I grasp thee,
    Undying determination flowing through me,
    Gazing past the darkest times,
With a soul of steel courage.
I wish thee to attack my opponents
    With my finger,
    Godly touch.
Simply take aim and send the power
    Through my hand
    Through my finger
    Through my gun
    Into the threat I see.
    Like a truck,
    And immovable force,
An unstoppable force of nature and human ingenuity.

    The power of the mind
    To create such a thing

However, the cost must be known
    Though intricate steel and gunpowder,
A deathly toll is to pay.
Life is a wonder without price
And to take it so simply
    Is a madman´s endeavor.
    The bullet, piercing, flowing, slicing,
    Is destined for death,
And though intentions may be bright
Effects may be more than dimming.
But if precautions are in order,
    And the situation is right,
    Power can be used correctly.

    To inforce order,
    To protect the innocent,
    To feed the community,
    And to save the day.

  13. Ode to Mrs. Marino’s Teachings
    by Babatunde

    Hilo High School gave me
    A wonderful teacher
    Who has amazing knowledge
    Ready to give to us,
    Everything she knew.
    I entered the class
Not knowing of what to expect
Like a person entering a cage
    Of never ending darkness.
    Suddenly hit with light,
    Exposed to the great knowledge,
    My mind was opened,
    By a great person
    An amazing teacher.
    I was honored greatly
    By a heavenly teacher.
    My mind was
To a level never reached before
    My brain felt unacceptable
    Like a decrepit scholar,

    A scholar of the cure,
    Of the knowledge.

Nevertheless, I resisted the burning temptation
To burn this temple of knowledge down.
I resisted the impulse to neglect
    This knowledge
To put it in an unbreakable cage
And each day look as if I don’t need it
    Like delinquents in a school
Who choose to places their hands on
The books given to them by a prisoner,
Rather than open the books of Mrs. Marino’s knowledge
And I opened up the book,
And read until the book was past its last page.

  14. Ode to pens

When I set it down anywhere
    I am set free
It makes my dreams come true
And it lets me lie to you
I can do whatever I want
So you won't know the truth

    I can move it around
    I can make lines
    Thick and thin
    Watch it twirl
    Watch it swirl
I hold it in my hand
    Just letting it dance
Let it do what it wants
    I can't stop
    Its too much fun
    I am in control
    Of my little world
    Just watch me go

    A picture forms
    From my mind
    It's amazing
What can come from a line
    A treat for the eyes

    doesn't matter what you say
    Its all made up anyway

  15. Ode to Friend

Every morning I arrive to school
two radiant forces shine upon me
One is the sun, glowing gold
    The other is her smile
    Radiant and full of
    undeserved love

    Mayhaps they are but one
    A single light-bringing force

    She is the sun
    She lights up the room
    A brilliant being
Eyes of green and hazel ablaze
    Let me possess thine glow,
    Beauty, and poise

Your kindness is that of a delicate flower
    Softness expressed in your embrace
Loveliness in the midst of the unbreaking wild
    Astounding, yet bold
    A gentle statement held firm
By roots which you have planted in soil of love

  16. Ode to Mom
    By:Spac

    My grandma brought
    Into this world
    a beautiful soul
    which she nursed
    with her caring hands
A soul as soft as sheep
    I hugged my mom
    with warm care
    Honored by her presence
    my heart was a baby
    crying and sad
    seeking guidance
    from something of status
    someone of accomplishments
    someone truly worthy
    of my sincere adoration
the moral of my ode it
    Honor what you have
Honor what you will always have
    A mothers love

  18. Ode to the throne

When I come home I sit on my throne,
a place where I can finally be alone,
made of shiny and white porcelain,
a thing that many under appreciate,
I love to rest on my throne,

there are many other thrones in this vast world,
but there is only one that I can call home,
I will always have an ode,
    to my beautiful white throne,
For my throne is just another humble abode,

    just because it is everywhere,
    just because it is unappreciated,
doesn't mean it's not as important as money,
oh, I will always have an ode,
    to my white porcelain throne,

  19. Ode to Music
    By:MCRX

    One melody, a hundred words
Focuses our emotions, and let them be heard
Some may say it saved them, and kept them alive
Showed them that they should live, and have death unheard

    Music can change anyone
It can inspire, relate, connect, and show
    What this world has become
The world we now do not know

Most who had gone through a lot
    Use music to get away
From all the pain before they go insane
Waiting for the day where they're okay

Lyrics, a melody, a voice, and a connection
    Creates the best song
What shaped me into who i've become today
And makes me feel I belong

  21. ode to chapstick

a new pack of cherry lip balm
    fresh out of the pack,
like fresh food right out of the oven
    so heavenly and delicious.
about the size of a toothpick
perfect to take along with you from place to place

oh chapstick you bring much happiness to many
its impossible to think of life without you
    like the earth without oxygen
it would fell as though something has gone missing

oh chapstick you bring much joy to the dry
like a dry sea that has been quenched of its thirst
Or like a dry lake bed that is waiting to be filled
oh chapstick how much i love you.
The meaning of this ode is to always moisturize.

  23. Ode to You

It was you who brought me
    something so bitter,
    it's sweet.

    I took it by surprise,
such bliss in a moment of time.
    Like a clear night sky
    that had turned bright
right in front of my eyes.

    As I viewed,
    I seeked,
    a moment so bright
    but entailed with what lingers.
    At the swamp
    the gleam of light shimmered

    Into the grey and greens,
the surface of the pond gleamed.
As what I thought would be,
only of the surface of the pond, it seemed.

    The sunlight,
    you tried to be,
    the crystal in the pond,
    so clear, I see.

  24. Trapped to its frame
    yet so divine
    fragile and fine
    a memory left to hang.
    So many moments captured
    and still confined
preserved for a peace of mind.
    oh the emotions you bring
and the thousands of words you sing.
    something oh so big
trapped in something oh so small
    a priceless artifact for all
Almost like your favorite show you watch over and over again
    so fragile yet strong.
    quite like the mind
    but appreciated by all
for you are trapped in time
bare for all the eyes in line.
