Before reading and analyzing the poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes, we created posters of our dreams. Then we created our own poems emulating "Harlem" encouraging each other just as Hughes masterfully did to persevere in the pursuit of our dreams . What is your dream?
It’s called life
ReplyDeleteDoes a dream stay forever in the mind of our actions?
Does our dreams fade like our memories as we age
Or wither like a body in flames?
The bones stay in the crumbled ash,
To remind us of its origin
That can never be taken back
Perhaps it stays in one's mind,
Like an stash of memories stored your attic
May not be ever used again by you
But one day, your dream can become someone destiny
Will you fulfill my dream?
-Maxwell Silver
Done Wrong:
ReplyDeleteWhat happens to dreams done wrong?
Does it burn a hole
in your heart?
Or stain everything-
you ever loved?
Does it take up all your memories?
Or taste like a soda
gone flat?
Or maybe, it just holds you
like a cobra?

ReplyDeleteWhat happens if you don't get out of bed?
When your bones make you feel 70
Or your battery is uncharged and at 20
So you stay in bed and lay there flat
Like a comatose cat
Your brain feels mushy
Like an overripe fruit
Your energy is at 0
Too tired to talk so you're mute
So you re-close your eyes
And let the time fly by

Dreamers
ReplyDeleteWhat happens to a dream advanced?
Does it thrive
Like a sunflower in the sun?
Or ache like a sore-
And then heal?
Does it smell of an ocean breeze?
Or slowly perfect to become appetizing -
Like an unripe fruit?
Maybe it sags
Like the weight that makes you stronger?
Or does it explode?

ReplyDeleteThe power of ambition
ReplyDeleteWhat happens to ambition oppressed?
Does it wash away
Like a mound on a hectic shore?
Or itch
Like a pussed sore?
Does it linger like fresh roadkill?
Or go down
Like a hard pill?
Maybe it just stains
Like a strong bleach?
Or is it in reach?
Legacy
ReplyDeleteAn emulation of the poem Harlem.
What happens to the souls of the dead?
Does it live on and grow
Like a tree sapling that’s well fed?
Or disappear like color
Drowned in the sun?
Does it change like seasons till summer?
Or crushed into crumbs
Like a fragile glass?
Or does it numb?

Don't Forget
ReplyDelete-Baby YodaAaAAAaaAa
What really happens when we forget to follow our dreams?
Well, maybe it spirals gracefully down to Earth,
Like a maple seedling falling from its tree.
It may age like a fine wine,
The strong smell of grapes invading your senses.
Does it go cold,
Like leftovers of dinner forgotten?
Or does it become more,
Like coal turned into diamond.
No matter how big or small,
Dreams are important.
Accomplished
ReplyDeleteA dream achieved, now how does that feel?
Is it like an eagle
Learning to soar high?
Or is it the feeling that you can touch the sky?
Would it be a sip of liquid
on a scorching summer day?
Can you hear the entire stadium chanting your name?
Can you strive for more
Or is this all you ́ve got?
All I know is that when I reach mine my drive will never stop.

A Symbol of Hope
ReplyDeleteWhat would you do if the world was on fire?
Would you sit on a couch and watch as the world burns?
or would you try and fight the fire?
Would you try and save the last fern?
or would you just sit there with no concern?
Would you burn slowly like linen and silk?
or would you run away as fast as a sip of milk.
Would you try and save people like hancock?
or would you fend for yourself lying on top of a rock.
whatever you do, do not expire.

"Childhood dreams" by Karen
ReplyDeleteWhat happens to a broken Childhood dream?
Does it fade like an old photograph?
Does it melt like ice cream on a hot day?
Or stick to your mouth like warm taffy?
Does it fall like a tower of wooden blocks?
Or does it wilt like a flower plucked from its root?
Whatever it is...
Can it be saved by a band-aid or a mother's gentle kiss?
To Everyone Who Has a Dream
ReplyDeleteDreams can either be a delightful gift or someone’s downfall.
Fragile as fine china,
As diverse as the tip of your tongue,
But would take the whole world to attain
just the tip of the iceberg.
However, once achieved
It’s like a bird flying for the first time,
Stars lighting up the dark sky at dusk,
And a roaring ocean during a storm inside of you,
Finally stilling.
How far will you go to still your soul?

ReplyDeleteWhat happens with a dream denied
Does it Rot Away
Like water in bay front
Or slave way like a homeless man
And then die
Does it slowly fade like the elderly
or become healthy
Like a futile child
Maybe it just breaks down
Like an endless sadness
Fulfill
ReplyDeleteWhat does it take to fulfill a dream?
Is it the long days and nights,
that make you as tired as a worn out shoe that just doesn't feel right?
Or breaking through when things get rough,
like a soldier battling in war? Now that being tough
Or is it the drive to push yourself farther and farther,
like blowing air into a balloon as your ability to fulfill that dream will get larger and larger?
Should you have hope?
Can hope can make you feel like you can do anything and grow?
and with all that, how far will you go?

To Dream
ReplyDeleteby kapeeps
Can dreams be destroyed or broken
Like a fallen glass on the floor?
Or a feeble vending machine holding a token,
But it all depends if you close the door.
Can it be forgotten and grow old
Like a dirty sock under the dresser?
Or a toy that was never sold
And the forgotten directions by a professor?
It's the choices you make and you will know,
Will you let it die or let it grow?
To The People of Broken Dreams
ReplyDeleteWhat happens to broken dreams?
Do they shatter?
Like a broken glass window.
Or does it turn into dust?
And dissapears in the wind.
Or maybe it lingers?
Like a rotton orange sprading its odor in the air.
All I know is...
When you quit your dreams you just don't care

Dreamers
ReplyDeleteWhy do dreams end?
Is it because they bloom like a flower
on a white sunny day?
Or are they snuffed out like a cigarette
in a dirty ash tray?
Is it nurtured like a tree
but ignored in it's youth?
Is it deferred, before it's time?
Does it turn into a terrible crime?
Maybe it just sit there and collect dust
like an old computer lost to time?
Or does it die?

Don't give up on your dreams!

What happens to a dream accomplished?
Does it fluoresh like a flower in the sun?
Or does it grow like a child?
Does it feel like you have finished a very long and treacherous hike.
Or does it give fulfillment like you just finished a marathon?
Is it like the taste of a crisp apple?
When you succeed, do you still want more?
Or does it give you the fulfillment you need you need?
Do you feel like a weight has been lifted off your chest?
Or do you feel like you could have done more?
Children with the light fading from their eyes
ReplyDeleteWhen the ink fades from an essay half written
When the acrid smoke fills the air from a sapling set ablaze
When the sweet glimmer of inspiration we hold dear becomes bitter like a candy rolled in mud
How will the heart go on?
When the soul of this world is chipped away like a cracked block of marble at the hands of an inept sculptor
When the dreams are forced away like ricocheting bullets
When the world never simply waits
How will we keep ourselves from becoming mere husks of our former selves?
When we ourselves have allowed this all to happen
How will we live?

It was birthed in the lush green fields of mesopotamia.
It filled one’s throat
With the aroma of fibers.
It empowered empires
Like a speech from the lips Caesar.
Could it be the mother of civilization?
It could be soft or tough
Like a well practiced parent.
It was the fuel for humanity,
Remedy to an illness unkind.
It’s name was cheese.
Destiny?

Is this dream you want so bad,
Really worth leaving the life you had?
Can you reach it and take flight
Without falling out of sight
Does it allow you to sleep tight
Without tossing and turning all night
Is it something you'd want to do for the rest of your life
Is it a dream you're willing to take on with a fight
Or is it like a fruit that is just too ripe
That fall and rots before you get a bite
Can you make this dream your destiny?
ReplyDeleteThe Troubled
What can you do with a missing score?
Do you stop the race-
Like a deer in headlights?
Or do you kill the goose-
With the golden eggs?
Do you take a step back-
And then sprain?
Maybe you still awake-
Like a bear in the winter.
Or do you float?
Future
ReplyDeleteHave you ever had a DREAM?
Does it fall-
Like a bird without wings?
Or stay dry-
Like noodles without water?
Does it collect dust like that sock under your bed?
Or fall off-
Like a hat on your head?
Maybe it grows-
Like a closet full of clothes.
Does it close?

Lost:
ReplyDeleteWhat happens to a dream that is lost?
Does it fly high like a bird in the sky
or deflate to the ground like a balloon past its time
does it float in the sea like a seed
or disappear like paper over time
Does it bind everything together like rope
or does it fade as easy as hope
does it rise high in the sky like the sun
or sink like an anchor that weighs a ton.

Time limit
ReplyDeleteDoes your dream have a limit
Or is it like the milk in your fridge
With an expiration date placed on its label
Limited in time -
It's hard to come by something that lasts for a long time
Does your dream come easy
Like the breath that you take
Or do you have to have faith and hope to go on
To chase your dream, maybe the hardest thing
Unless your the fastest man alive.

Harlem Emulation: What of heartbreak?
ReplyDeleteWhat happens when one realizes the tragedy of living?
Will they wither, like blossoms in a garden
where hell has frozen over?
Or grow stronger, and spit in the face of death or
-much crueler and cold- life?
Will they drown in ear-piercing shrieks of their bottled-up pain,
Or be butterflies, free and at peace?
Will their souls overflow with solemn relief;
Will their hearts be mirrors and shatter soundlessly?
What happens when one realizes the tragedy of living?
